I have a lot of feelings about Mike Birbiglia.
Stand-up comedy can be biting, cynical, abrasive, disgusting, and even mean. I say this as somebody who loves stand-up. But Mike Birbiglia is like, this warm blanket of a comedian. His stories are self-deprecating, understated, and self-reflexive and when they’re not, they’re whimsical and silly; the joke lies more in the dialogue he engages himself in than in cynicism or elitism.
I’m in a sour mood and listening to Birbigs right now. He’s describing how he learned that he had a tumor in his bladder. It’s a sad, sad story, but he’s so melodramatic that it’s a story that turns out to be really funny and charming. That warm blanket, you know?
